Urban Intervention

A series of public interventions took place at different locations throughout the city of Toronto.

Business owners within selected city areas were asked to participate by allowing me to take over the televisions located on their premises, replacing broadcasts from CNN, MTV and ESPN with live video images from the street.

A group of five performers on bicycles equipped with wireless cameras moved through the city streets, following simple steering algorithms used within gaming environments developed from observations of urban traffic flow.

Bank, restaurant, furniture store and bar patrons witnessed the movements and flows as experienced by each cyclist. The interaction and interference of flow when travelling through the city was visualized and broadcasted from television sets at local businesses, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.

Either entering as a cyclist or non-cyclist, the public became engaged with a network where negotiations between people, streets, buildings, signals and hardware, culminated in a continuous spatial-temporal state of change.
